DiatomProjektet støttes af samarbejdende forskere fra hele verden, under ledelse af Mayama laboratoriet ved Tokyo Gakugei Universitet. Formålet er tofoldigt, dels at fremme folks forståelse for vandmiljøet ved at bruge SimRiver og det supplerende materiale, dels at fremme forståelse og samarbejde mellem enkeltpersoner fra hele verden ved at sammenligne resultater af læreprocesser.
