ICUE Symposium – East Asian Teachers Now:
Summary and Evaluation of the Work of the International Consortium of Universities of Education in East Asia

Program on the day

The “ICUE Symposium – East Asian Teachers Now: Summary and Evaluation of the Work of the International Consortium of Universities of Education in East Asia”was held in Tokyo Yaesu Hall on March 24, 2015 in Tokyo Gakugei University.

This university promoted projects as the institution where the Executive Office of the International Consortium of Universities of Education in East Asia (ICUE) is set up with the support of a special grant from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. However, FY2014 was the final year of that grant. Consequently, this organization held a symposium in the format of a joint review regarding the East Asian Teachers Now (Tokyo Gakugei University Press, March 2015) published as a final report while also serving as an external evaluation.

Vice President Takeshi Fuji from this university served as the moderator and Director & Vice President Tadashi Hasegawa gave the opening remarks. This symposium was held in two parts. In the first part, Associate Professor Makoto Shimoda gave a report titled “Work of the International Consortium of Universities of Education in East Asia and International Graduate School Programs” while Professor Yasuyuki Iwata gave a report titled “Overview of International Joint Research.” In the second part, three external review committee members including Chair Professor Yang Szu Wei of MingDao University, Assistant Professor Xia Pengxiang of Capital Normal University and Associate Professor Hiroto Ide of Nagasaki University respectively gave comments related to quality assurance for teacher training in universities in Taiwan, China, South Korea and Japan. In the general discussion, there were questions from, among others, teachers at Aichi University of Education where the 2015 East Asia International Symposium on Teacher Education was held and at Northeast Normal University where the 2013 East Asia International Symposium on Teacher Education was held. There was lively discussion. There were voices of hope from those in attendance for the further development of academic and student exchanges in the East Asia region like this.

The ICUE promotes exchange activities on research and education in cooperation with teacher training faculties and universities in the East Asia region centered on Beijing Normal University, East China Normal University, Seoul National University of Education, Kongju National University of Education, Osaka Kyoiku University and Tokyo Gakugei University. (The Mongolian State University of Education joined the consortium in FY2014 to bring to 44 the total number of member schools.) The special grant for this program ended in FY2014. However, currently, the ICUE is working on restructuring as a cooperative project between teacher training faculties and universities in Asia with the Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia regions also in the field of vision.
