Scholarships for International Students

 Scholarships Recommended by Tokyo Gakugei University

The selection of international students recommended by Tokyo Gagkugei University for the scholarships from the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), foundations, etc. for the current and following academic year is made collectively in the spring semester. The scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students and research students with "Student" status of eligibility (excluding government-sponsored students). Students are assessed on the basis of their grades, scholarship eligibility status and essay exam results (except for undergraduates) and are recommended for various scholarships in order of rank. Students who wish to receive any of the  university recommended scholarships must apply for it.

How to apply:Submit the following documents to the International Students unit, International Division.

・Scholarship Application Form (designated form)

・Certificate of Residence or residence card (both sides)

・Copy of academic transcripts (only for 2nd and 3rd year graduate students of a doctoral program)

※International graduate students and research students are required to take an essay exam.

For scholarships that do not require a university recommendation, students may apply on their own.

General Tutor

A tutoring system is available to support International students with their studies and on-campus life.

【How to apply】

Please fill out the tutor application form, have your academic advisor fill out the form, and submit it to the Short-Term Exchange Unit of the International Division at the counter or by e-mail (ryugaku2(a)u-gakugei.ac.jp).  ※Please replace (a) with @.

【Duration】

In principle, during the first year abroad at Gakugei University.

【Application Deadline】

Spring semester: end of April

Fall semester: end of October

 ■Thesis Tutor

Japanese-language tutoring is available for International students when writing their master's thesis in Japanese. Tutors are available only for the second-year master's students. The period is from November to the date of submission of the master's thesis.

If you wish to apply for a thesis tutor, please fill in the thesis tutor application form with the comments from your academic advisor, and submit it to the Short-Term Exchange Unit of the International Division or by e-mail (ryugaku2(a)u-gakugei.ac.jp).

Comprehensive Renter's Insurance for International students "Ryuhosyo"

For international students who have trouble finding a guarantor when renting an apartment, the University (Director of the International Affairs Division) will act as a guarantor on the condition that the student enrolls in the "Comprehensive Compensation for Foreign Student Housing" program offered by the Japan Educational Exchanges and Services Association. Please contact the International Affairs Division if you wish to join the program.

Extracurricular Activities (Part-time Job)

Students with "Student" status of residence are permitted to engage in a part-time job within a limited amount of time. In so doing, Students will need permission by their  academic advisor before applying to the Immigration Office for "permission to engage in activities other than that permitted under the status of residence."  For details, please check the Immigration Bureau's website and apply for it on your own.

Permitted hours of activity other than that permitted under the status of residence "College Student": 28 hours per week or less. (within 8 hours per day during school breaks)

・Part-time jobs that are not appropriate for students (those involving sex industry or other related activities) are prohibited.

・If you work part-time without a "Permit to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence", you will be in violation of the law and will be severely punished, including deportation from Japan.

・You must not miss classes in order to work part-time.

・The period of validity is the same as the period of your status of residence, so if you wish to renew your period of stay, you must re-apply for the Permit to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence.

・Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship students receive a scholarship monthly that allows them to devote themselves to their studies without working part-time. For them, part-time job is not permitted in principle with some exceptions. If you wish to engage in remunerated activities under special circumstances, please consult with your academic advisor first.

Temporary Departure

 If you are going to leave Japan temporarily, such as for a temporary return to your home country, you must consult with your academic advisor and submit an "Overseas Travel Notification" to the International Affairs Section in advance. 

Notification of overseas travel

・Please be sure to carry your resident card and passport when temporarily leaving and re-entering Japan.

・If you re-enter the country within one year(Or until the expiration date of the visa if the visa expires within a year)of your departure and continue the same activity, a "deemed re-entry permit" will be issued. However, please note that if you have more than one year remaining on your period of stay and will be re-entering Japan more than one year after your departure, you must obtain a "re-entry permit" in advance.

Status of Residence, Renewal of Period of Stay, etc.

Extension of Period of Stay and Change of Status of Residence

To extend the period of stay or change the status of residence, please refer to the website of the Immigration and Residence Management Agency and apply for it by yourself. In the application, you need to obtain from the International Office the "Application for Extension of Period of Stay" or "Application for Permission for Change of Status of Residence" to be issued by Tokyo Gakugei University. It takes about one week for such forms to be issued at the office.

An application for extension of stay can be filed three months prior to the expiration date of the visa.
